Flowers Around Town in August

August 2026

Friday, 14 August 2026

There are numerous rose mallow, Hibiscus syriacus, now in flower around town.
I think they must spread by re-seeding, as they appear in roadside undergrowth.

Only single flowered shrubs have fertile flowers. Doubles such as this are sterile.

A lovely combination of Calibrachoa and silver trailing Dichondra on Bridge Street in Frenchtown.

Friday, 7 August 2026

A marvellous combination at the Riegel Federal Credit Union bank in Holland Township.

Allium senescens var. glaucum are in exuberant bloom, backed by dwarf Picea pungens

Surprise lily, resurrection lily, naked ladies, Lycoris squamigera,
erupts with flowers in summer. These were on Palmyra Corner Road.
but not any leaves - they appeared earlier, have now withered away.

Perhaps you do not think of corn as flowering. They do! These tassels at the top
of the bold grass-like stalks are the male flowers, necessary to pollinate female silk
at the cobs if we are to enjoy one of summer's most welcome seasonal local produce.
